DSGi backs iPad as best-selling Christmas gadget
A “3D Christmas” is also on the cards
Currys and PC World owner DSGi is forecasting the iPad to be the most popular of the 5,000 products on its shelves this Christmas. Revealing a list of the ten “big technologies” for the festive season this year, the retailer said its buyers are backing a variety of exciting new products: Microsoft’s Kinect and 3D TVs are placed second and third respectively in the rank of predicted best sellers.
DSGi’s Jeremy Fennell said: “There is no doubt that the iPad is going to be the number one Christmas gift this year. It has already proved incredibly popular and with even more accessories launching it’s only going to make a must-have technology even more attractive. There will be choice beyond Apple by Christmas but it’s hard to see anyone toppling their dominance in the short term.”
Microsoft’s Kinect for XBox 360 is tipped to be the second biggest seller of the season. According to Huw Crwys-Williams, category director at DSGi, the product is the biggest step forward in game play since the Wii.
A move towards 3D this Christmas is also predicted, as the technology works its way across different products. By December, 25% of the TVs at PC World and Currys will be 3D. “With Sky planning the launch of its 3D channel along with numerous movie titles due for release in the format, demand is expected to be high,” the retailer said. “More 3D cameras will also arrive this winter and there will be more titles for the PS3, which already has 3D capability.”
Also included in DSGi’s Christmas 2010 best-sellers are digital cameras and camcorders, E-readers and touchscreen laptops.
